A sunken courtyard illuminated by skylights recalls secret garden imagery and asserts that children’s spaces needn’t look like a toy box. Jurors deemed “magical” a maple cabinet wall—almost featureless when closed—that unfolds in pleated panels to engage space and create imaginary rooms. A stage, a puppet playhouse, and tables for story-based art programs are revealed in a way that “gives kids credit for having intelligence.”
