Jurors faced ambiguity when trying to separate the interior from the architecture of this inward-looking building. In the end, they commended the projects ability to define an interior largely by exploiting views back toward the building itself. A central courtyard, shaped from slightly curved glazed classroom walls, provides a protected play area for infants. Glazed pavilions push into the courtyard on two sides and open up the interior to views of the building. Patterned floor tiles modeled after the Raffia cloths of Zaire mark the entrances to the center and its classrooms.
