Affordable new rental housing has come to seem like an impossible ideal, but this project makes it a reality. Four buildings were laid out on the long, narrow site to form an open-sided garden courtyard at the back. The jury admired the strong sense of place created on the courtyard side and the contribution of the lively facades to the streetscape. Because of the project’s prominent location, high standard of design and positive impact, it has already spurred two additional private developments.
