The dilemma of siting living spaces away from the street without creating a fortress-like feeling is resolved here with a façade that is a beautiful, abstract composition. The jury admired this gesture, as well as the subtlety and richness created with simple materials of wood and brick. The entry sequence is defined by a series of horizontal elements that include the garage, site wall and entrance canopy. Inside, the house becomes more vertical on the sloping site. The main rooms all have views over a garden to the woods and lake beyond. (Double winner. See Interior Architecture Awards.)
