This project’s essence lives in the physical definition of the rural Indiana landscape, the cultural rituals of a Hispanic congregation, the theoretical precepts of the Catholic faith, and most importantly, the apparition of Our Lady Guadalupe. Mary appeared before the humble Juan Diego not as a Madonna but as an Aztec princess to show her understanding of the culture and its people so that they could better comprehend the message. The project reflects that apparition. The architects started with a common, pre-engineered structural system manufactured locally. And by adding simple metal and glass cladding techniques and some special carpenter-assembled elements in the sanctuary, created a meaningful space with some sophistication.
