This prototype renovation of a 20,000-square-foot inpatient floor creates a new environment for the differently abled. Achievements included surpassing ADA guidelines, meeting the budget, and developing a new universal design standard. The design team developed a "therapy walk," reclaiming the wide corridor space for activities, and created a unique multi-purpose/dining room on each floor. A central patterning motif recalling "body in motion" imagery was used throughout the building interiors to instill energy in the environment, inspiring and encouraging patients to reach beyond their limitations.
