The architect and his wife built this modern 1,500-square-foot cottage on a Lake Michigan dune in Door County, Wis. Resolving the technical problems of earlier modernism was one goal and making a statement about modesty, context, the environment, and materials another goal. The wood frame pavilion is clad in natural finish clear cedar siding. Clearstory windows and 12-foot rolling doors are made of polished mahogany frames. Local fieldstone was used on the fireplace, retaining walls and walkways. The 9-foot-high ceilings are varnished cedar; floors are cedar fir; doors are river birch; cabinets and built-ins are maple; and most of the furniture is beechwood. White plaster walls (with abstract lithographs) act as a backdrop for the natural woods. Sunscreens and a screen porch temper the environment. Columns add a modest monumentality to the open plan.
