"The highest compliment for a restoration," according to a juror, "is that the space feels like it might have felt originally." The architects earned that accolade for Holmes Lounge by carrying the restoration through the full range of details. Built as the University's library in 1902, Holmes Lounge became a study hall/cafeteria 60 years later and gradually lost its historic character. As part of the restoration, oak wainscots conceal new HVAC units installed where library shelves once stood. Having regained its original grandeur, it now serves as the University's primary public reception space. |
