Symphony Center

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP's design for the new Symphony Center successfully preserves the original intimacy and architectural integrity of Daniel Burnham's Orchestra Hall. The center's acoustics, however, have been improved by increasing the volume of the main hall, reconfiguring the stage, and adjusting a system of acoustic elements that are hidden from view. A new steel and glass acoustical canopy also was installed to reflect sound both across the stage and into the audience. Jurors particularly liked the skillful way in which the acoustical elements were hidden and dubbed the project "high-tech with a soft touch."
