Nagoya International School

The American School in Nagoya, Japan, designed by Perkins & Will, is a freestanding object similar to the circle and hexagon of two existing school buildings on the site designed by Frank Lloyd Wright disciple Antonio Raymond. The new building houses classrooms and a gymnasium. A roof and outdoor stair are built down a slope to a road that runs along the property and are connective elements through which one passes to reach the existing structures. The roof also serves as an enclosure for communal indoor and outdoor gathering spaces. Jurors liked how the circular shape of the new building picks up on the shape of the existing buildings.
