Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP's renovation of State Street removed an unsuccessful circa 1979 transit mall, allowed private vehicular traffic back onto the street, and created a streetscape that complements the area's historic buildings. Sidewalks were narrowed to create a greater sense of activity on the street, trees and sidewalk planters were installed, and historic elements, such as streetlights that are a recasting of lights that once lined the street and stylistically appropriate subway kiosks, were introduced. The jurors felt this project was a triumph because space was being returned to the public.
