The renovation of the Church Hall of Old St. Patrick's Church, one of Chicago's oldest churches, is part of a phased master plan to rehabilitate the entire structure. The Church Hall is a basement space used for a variety of functions including dinners, lectures and concerts. The goal was to create a light and airy space within the existing confines of the basement walls and the many columns which support the main floor of the church. The solution focused on the ceiling, which consists of repetitive cast plaster vaults which relate to the grid of the existing columns, and which are reminiscent of gothic vaulted ceilings. To reinforce the lightness of the space, the floor material is white stained maple and the walls are painted a creamy off-white.
