"This project was very well done in spite of its limited budget. This design changes the image of what social service agencies are supposed to look like." -Jury Comment

This unique, not-for-profit agency helps local teenagers make the transition from dependency on state programs to independent, productive living through job placement services, housing aid and professional counseling. Specific design challenges included reusing existing construction where possible, obtaining used furnishings to supplement new, creating a dynamic environment to retain staff and volunteers, and employing durable, maintenance-free finishes in high traffic areas.
Common materials produce an exciting environment for staff and clients. Brightly colored vinyl floor patterns and matching accent walls enliven key areas and transition points. Vibrant colors emphasize angled and curved walls that have been carefully placed for maximum impact. Standard furniture finishes lean towards the neutral tones and act as a counter point to the eye-catching colors and graphics. Through the solicitation of contractors and suppliers and donated time, materials and furnishing, this project had a final cost of under $12 per square foot.
