To view art in the best possible context was the most important aspect of the program for this gallery in the River North neighborhood of Chicago. The second was a schedule of less than two months for design and build-out and a $25-per-square-foot construction budget.
An angled wall, divided by reveals, was constructed seven inches above the floor and was backlit with incandescent lighting to create a greater sense of width and draw visitors into the space. The position of soffits, a reception desk and partition walls links individual spaces, making the space appropriate for viewing art. The interplay of light and depth encourages a sense of anticipation. "This space works as architecture as well as background for art." -Jury Comment
