Where once stood a decaying, under-utilized wharf disconnected from the lakefront park system, now stands a 1.1 million square foot waterfront public amenity. With an entirely new infrastructure, the 3,000 foot long Navy Pier was designed to give pedestrian visitors a manageable, recognizable sense of scale and place. The Family Pavilion, with retail outlets, 440-seat IMAX theater, Chicago Children's Museum, and food court, anchors the west end of the Pier. Overlooking Navy Pier Park's Ferris wheel, carousel and 1500-seat Skyline Stage is the Crystal Garden. Beyond is the 230,000-square-foot Festival Hall convention facility and the Grand Ballroom which anchors the east end. Tying this together, is Dock Street, the outdoor promenade featuring cart markets, performance and fishing pavilions, trolley shelters, and the beer garden. |
