This new 120,000-square-foot research
laboratory and related facilities is
sited between two existing laboratories
at the Ohio State University. The new
building and the two existing structures
are united into a single composition
which clearly defines the east edge of
campus and forms an entry to the medical
school from the south. The scheme consists of a six-story research
tower containing offices and laboratories over
a two-story base containing shared facilities
and a research library. The first floor of the
base defines the edge of an existing, heavily
travelled pedestrian walkway, while the curve
of the second floor library reading room
echoes the horseshoe-shaped football stadium
across the athletic field. A vertical tower
contains elevators and lounges for the
researchers on each laboratory floor.
An interior circulation spine connects
two new entry lobbies for the complex at
the ground floor.
"The building develops a tremendously picturesque edge." -Jury Comment
