Join AIA Chicago: YAF for the final phase of the reThink/reDesign/
reCycle competition. At this one-day exhibition, see 25 prototypes for a new recycling receptacle, built by architects and designers who have reexamined recycling in Chicago’s outdoor public areas. Mayor Daley will deliver the exhibition keynote address. The jury of architects and recycling experts includes Jeanne Gang, AIA; Doug Garafalo, FAIA; Carol Ross Barney, FAIA; Sadhu Johnston, Commissioner, Dept. of Environment; Alderman Virginia Rugai (Ward 19).  Cast your vote for a favorite receptacle to win the "People's Choice Award."  In addition, information booths will be on-site promoting the City of Chicago's “Live Green” campaign.  Learn new ways of incorporating green activities and technologies into your life. Music provided by Middle West Pollywogs, featuring banjo player Smith Koester.

Doug Garafolo, FAIA
Founder and Principal, Garafolo Architects

Doug Garofalo is the principal and founder of Garofalo Architects, an architectural practice in Chicago that emphasizes speculation and innovation as the core of the firm's contributions to the profession of architecture, academia, and the larger community. The rigorous experiments of the firm within both university and practice have produced products that are often the result of a collaborative approach with artists, scientists, academics, and other professionals.

Mr. Garofalo graduated from Yale University in 1987, and was a recipient of the prestigious Skidmore Owings & Merrill Foundation Traveling Fellowship. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame In 1981. He is currently a Professor of Architecture at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Architecture, and has served as a facilitator at Archeworks. Jeanne Gang, AIA
Founder and Principal, Studio Gang

Ms. Gang is principal and founder of the Studio Gang. She formed the practice in 1997 after significant experience as a senior designer in Chicago with BHA and in Rotterdam with OMA/Rem Koolhaas. Ms. Gang leads the design teams at Studio Gang and collaborates directly with clients. Her focus on materials, technology and sustainability is supported through a mode of working that combines practice, teaching and research. Her work with Studio Gang has received national and international awards and recognition.

Carol Ross Barney, FAIA
Founder and Principal, Ross Barney + Jankowski

Carol Ross Barney, FAIA is founder and Principal of Ross Barney + Jankowski. She is responsible for the design excellence of all projects undertaken by the firm. Dedicated to improving the built environment, her work has an international reputation in design of institutional and public buildings. Her work has been published in national and international journals, books and newspapers. The work has been awarded with numerous honors including four Institute Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architects. Her drawings have been widely exhibited and collected by the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Historical Society, The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the National Building Museum. Carol is the recipient of the American Institute of Architects 2005 Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture. This award recognizes excellence in architectural achievement.

Ross Barney is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Following graduation, she served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica planning national parks. She has taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Oklahoma (Goff Chair for Creative Architecture) and the Illinois Institute of Technology where she serves on the College Board of Overseers

Lois Vitt Sale, AIA
Vice Chairwoman, USGBC Chicago

Lois Vitt Sale is a licensed architect and the Corporate Vice President of Wight & Company, a Chicago architecture firm that promotes green design and sustainability. Ms Vitt Sale is also a member of the USGBC council, and has been working to advance green design in the Chicago area. Ms. Vitt Sale has been at the forefront of the green movement in Chicago, and since 1997 has lead work on two LEED certified buildings. Wight & Company has had five LEED projects in the last few years that are either pending LEED certification or have become LEED certified. Two of the five are awaiting the LEED Platinum rating.

In addition to her devotion to sustainable design, Ms. Sale has worked with the City of Chicago for the last two years, educating people about the benefits and aspects of green roofs in the marketplace. She has also assisted OMP in creating sustainable guidelines for the O'Hare Expansion and has worked on the Mayor's 2003 Water agenda.

Ms. Sale is also personally committed to the environment: she drives a hybrid car, has a green roof on her garage, and a worm community is at work in her basement, recycling food waste into mulch for her garden.

Julie Cahillane
Manager of Recycling and Refuse Operations, Northwestern University

Julie Cahillane is the manager of recycling and refuse operations at Northwestern University's Chicago and Evanston campuses. She is a LEED certified AP and strives to steer Northwestern in 'green' directions. The Illinois Recycling Association, the Illinois Governor's Pollution Prevention Awards, and the American Forest and Paper Association have all acknowledged her work.

Prior to working at Northwestern, Ms. Cahillane worked as an education coordinator for CRInc., a recycling company. In this role she researched and designed solid waste education programs addressing waste reduction, recycling, and recycled product procurement.

Ms. Cahillane has served as secretary, membership chair, and Midwest Regional Representative for the National Recycling Coalition's College and University Recycling Council and was the co-chair of the Illinois Recycling Association's College and University Caucus.

Sadhu A. Johnston
City of Chicago Commissioner of the Department of the Environment

Mr. Johnston works for the City of Chicago where he serves as the Assistant to the Mayor for Green Initiatives.  His responsibilities include the coordination and facilitation of green efforts throughout the City.  Prior to working for the City of Chicago, Sadhu was the Founder and Executive Director of the Cleveland Green Building Coalition, an Affiliate of the USGBS.  The CGBC is a non-profit organization dedicated to implementing green building throughout Northeast Ohio.  The organization's accomplishments included a $4 million green renovation of an historic bank known as the Cleveland Environmental Center.  The Center, which serves as a home for various non-profit organizations features a green roof with native endangered plants, a geothermal heating and cooling system, healthy indoor air quality, and many other green building features.

Alderman Ginger Rugai
City of Chicago 19 th Ward Alderman

Mayor Daley appointed Ginger Rugai to fill the vacancy of the 19th Ward Alderman in December of 1990. In February 1991 Alderman Rugai was elected for her first term and was subsequently reelected in 1995 and 1999 and 2003. Alderman Rugai is Chairman of the City Council's Committee on Energy, Environmental Protection and Public Utilities and Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Police and Fire, and has worked to provide recycling options for her Ward beyond the Blue Bag solution.    

Ms. Rugai is Past President of the Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization, member of Little Company of Mary Hospital Foundation Board, St. Xavier University President's Advisory Council, Vice President of the Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago, Kiwanis, Brother Rice High School Board of Directors and the Beverly Art Center. She was appointed to Mayor Daley's Task Force on Women's Health and the Cook County Women's Commission.
