Architects as Artists at Looptopia
Architects braved the rain on Friday, May 2 to construct sculptures on the riverwalk area by Wacker Drive and Wabash Avenue for Chicago's Looptopia event.
Three teams of AIA Chicago architects designed and built sculptures from waste objects provided by UPS and the City of Chicago. The sculptures were made from pallets, bubble wrap, plastic bottles, car parts and other repurposed materials. Members of Burners without Borders assisted in the construction.
Organized by the Committee on the Environment, the project involved UPS providing pallets and transportation. "Each team was able to see new possibilities in commercial waste products," said Steven Kismohr, AIA, COTE chairman and project coordinator.
After an evening concert in appreciation of the day's work, AIA Chicago members and others retreated to the AIA Chicago office to continue the celebration.
