In addition to the non-stop educational sessions and keynote speakers presented by AIA National, AIA Chicago will be offering more than 80 tours to show off the architectural prowess of our city. The chapter will also be hosting numerous "Dining + Design" events which will offer opportunities to relax, eat, drink and network with dedicated design and building professionals.
You can receive free access to the 2014 AIA Convention by volunteering with AIA Chicago or AIA National.
AIA Chicago is offering numerous volunteer opportunities, affording you the chance to volunteer at the level of your convenience. By supporting AIA Chicago at the Host Chapter Lounge, the information desk or tour desk, you can participate in the convention on a whole new level.
Tour Departure Area Guide: Tour Departure Area volunteers will assist AIA Chicago and transport staff to ensure all tours adhere to schedule. Duties include guest check-in, crowd management, and directing guests to the appropriate tour bus areas.
Tour Chaperone Volunteer: Chicago requires one (1) Tour Chaperone volunteer to attend each tour and help crowds stay together. Tour Chaperones will assist the bus driver and tour guide(s) as needed (i.e. help maintain routes, schedules), and distribute tour materials, such as maps, to guests.
Info Booth Volunteer: Information Booth volunteers will work alongside AIA Chicago staff within the Information Booth on the convention expo floor. Information Booth volunteers should be comfortable answering general questions about the convention and the city at large. The latest edition of the AIA Guide to Chicago will also be distributed from this location.
Lounge Volunteer: Lounge Volunteers will assist AIA Chicago staff within the AIA Chicago Host Chapter Lounge. The lounge will contain educational sessions and exhibits. These volunteers should be knowledgeable about AIA Chicago, and Chicago in general; part of the task is to be a roving ambassador. Some assistance will be needed at the educational sessions, such as passing out hand-outs and arranging chairs.
Event Volunteer: Event Volunteers will assist AIA Chicago staff during evening programs hosted at various locations around Chicago. Duties include guest check-in, directing guests both within and outside of the venue, and other tasks as needed. Event Volunteers will NOT be involved with serving food and beverages.
AIA National Volunteer Information
AIA National is offering the opportunity to receive free access to the convention. In return for your commitment to serve as a session or door monitor at a minimum of four (4) CE seminars (session prefix: TH, FR, SA) (min. 8-10 hours), you will receive a full 3-Day Pass to the Expo, Keynotes, and Education Sessions.
Volunteers who act as a Session/Door Monitor will check in education program attendees on the convention floor.
The AIA Convention Legacy Project was created to garner public awareness of the importance of architecture and give back to the host city's larger community. This year, AEC Cares is pleased to partner with Metropolitan Family Services for the annual community service project, which will renovate a 40,000 square foot early learning center on Chicago's South Side—a center that provides care to 120+ of Chicago's neediest children, ages 6 weeks to 5 years.
You must book your hotel through AIA Housing to receive the AIA Convention rate. If rooms are no longer available in the hotel or at the rate of your choice, you will be placed in the nearest hotel with comparable rates.
